The king of the forest, the stag is the protector of all other creatures. For the native communities of North America, the deer was a messenger, an animal of power, and a totem representing sensitivity, intuition and gentleness. Walking the Cherokee lands in Smokey Mountain National Park, we came face to face: his antlers soft and mossy, a whoosh of breath as he softly exhaled, watching me with limpid brown eyes.
This painting captures the magic of spring growth, layers within layers, new life coming forth in the forest.
